Service outage

Service to certain domain names was disrupted this morning starting at 5:05 AM. I discovered the problem at 7:23, and was unable to quickly figure out what was wrong. I contacted Kevin, who's done some work for us now and then. He quickly realized that an automatic update to the nameserver had failed. By manually installing the missing files, service was restored at 8:44.

Auto updates usually "fail safe". There are a lot of servers asking for those files when there is an update, and if they come from a server that's too busy, our server simply does the update the next day, instead.

In this case, however, the software needed new support files ("libraries") as well. The new software installed fine, but the new libraries did not. When the new software tried to use the old libraries, it bombed.

Anyhow, I figured people might wonder what happened.
