beating a dead horse

Not trying to get anyone mad here but, just trying to liven up this forum with some posts.

Is there any word on a new editor coming about anytime soon?

we're getting a new editor?

I try to drop by the forum at least twice a week to catch up on news and announcements, and to post any new Site Showcase stuff.
But getting back to the original question: What is the new editor? What features? Is it LBB friendly? When will be a go? As long as the webtv users have the option of a growable textarea, any editor is fine with me. :)

Site Showcase

Our editor

I like the old editor but we shouldn't use it because it'll mess up our escape codes that we have to put in to get a page validated; I think.

Sometimes after I edit a page my apostrophes (') turn to asterisks. Also I just checked my links; I took Nef's pages off ages ago, they're back along with others. Yes, I did reload the page after editing.

I could be wrong but I think this is the fault of the editor. BTW Amish Hosting has dandy editors, best I've seen.

It's a complete site manager

It's not just a new editor that I'm working on; it's a complete site manager.

Programmers talk about the 50/50 rule. You can get a project 95% done in 50% of the time it takes to get it finished. (Everybody agrees that there's a joke in there, somewhere, but nobody's quite been able to figure out what it is.)

The problem is that I'm a perfectionist. I get the project 95% done, and I hit upon a problem with the project architecture. Hmmm, it doesn't make sense to do it this way. So I start over, trying it another way.

I initially prototyped the system in Perl. That's what the current software is done in. Then I thought I'd switch to Python, because it's more efficient, and should be more reliable. That turned out to be a mistake, because I simply don't know Python well enough. What I know best is C. It's a lot smaller and faster. It also results in more reliable code: the same error that would cause the editor to crash in Perl will be discovered by the C compiler, and it has to be fixed before the program will run. On the other hand, because you have to fix all those errors, it takes longer to write the code.

What's more, there are all sorts of functions in Perl that are already written; in C, you have to write them yourself. That makes the site editor a lot bigger project. But I believe it will be worth it.

NOBODY will be forced to move to the new site manager. And yes, it will be fully compatible with the LBB and TNB. However, those who continue to use the existing editor will not be able to run CGI applications.

Any word on it coming out soon? Why sure, Bud. It's 95% done. (Once again.)

Mail feature...

DeDe
Hi Paul,
I have tried sending some photos stored in my file manager using the mail feature. I am sending them to myself at PJMWSS@msn.com. I do not get these at my mail site. I checked in the "junk" mail...not there either. I tried sending things to myself and all of those came through fine so I am thinking it is not a MSN problem...but who knows...:~)
Anyway I know how busy you are but if you find the time would you check and see if the mail thingy is working at
pjmws.
Thank you so very much,
DeDe aka pjmws Phyllis J. Smith

Re: mail feature

Hi DeDe,

It's good to see you here, but sorry you're having trouble with the mail.

I just tested the mail feature from my pc, I sent a couple of jpgs from within my file manager, including one to an msn address. All the files arrived at their destinations, including the msn one. I'm not sure what the problem could be with yours--- are you using a pc or msntv to send the files?

I know Paul will be along soon to check it out for you, I just wanted to test and make sure the system is working, and it seems to be fine on my end.

-Sherry

Dede, those images are sent

Dede, those images are sent out using the email address we have on file for you as the "From:" address. They're from you, right? If there was any other address for the "From:" address, it would be confusing to recipients.

It appears that Microsoft has a rule in their spam filters, that says if mail appears to come from their own domains, and they know it doesn't, it must be spam.

There are a number of workarounds. One would be to open a throwaway mail account somewhere else, mail the file to that throwaway mail account, and then go to that account to forward the file to your "real" email address.

is only someone else's momentary entertainment

DeDe Thanks all...I am on

DeDe
Thanks all...I am on the "2" so that right there is probably the trouble. I wanted to try sending some things to myself as an attachment in order to try somehthing with Owens site. When I snag gifs or jpgs which have transparent bgs they come with black bgs...I have been thinking maybe those bgs could be made transpartent again. I will just forget about all this. When I used the mail thingy at the directory page it does have the right address: PJMWSS@msn.com so that part is ok. I checked in the "junk" mail but they do not get there either. It is probably a fluke with msn...
Thanks anyway. I am still wanted to pay you Paul for my space. Remember you said you would send me a form to use my Visa. I am not rushing you...just do not want to lose my space.
Warmest regards,
DeDe

Mail..

DeDe
Hi Paul...
The mail at the directory worked fine after I changed the "From" to pjmws instead of the PJMWSS@msn.com which was on the email automatically.

I should have tried that before writing...sorry 'bout that. Thanks to both you and Sherry and big hugs to you both...
