Is your firewall, virus protection up to snuff?

I'm not sure why, but I suspect it has something to do with the conviction of that spammer.

Anyhow we're seeing a lot more attacks on the servers this week. It had slowed down quite a bit from earlier this year, but Tuesday set a record, with nearly 10,000 attacks from 94 different IP addresses. Normally, Sunday is the heaviest day for attacks, and Tuesday is fairly light.

So maybe it's because school's out, rather than someone getting convicted.

Not to worry, the servers rebuffed those attacks without any problem - but it suggests YOUR computers may be at heightened risk.

In any case, I highly recommend that you have a firewall running - preferably, with a router/switch as added protection - and that you have a good anti-virus program running, and up to date.

The latest tests suggest that Trend Micro is best, but I have my reservations about Trend Micro. I still recommend using Avast or AVG, both of which are free for the download. If you have Norton or McAfee, I really recommend you dump them and replace them with AVG or Avast. (It's not what a program cost that matters - it's what it's worth - and both Norton and McAfee appear to be bad news.)

Today has been new record

Today has been new record for break-in attempts.

They managed to add a single line to the end of PHP files on this site. It was attempting to add a banner ad to each page. Instead, it kept the site from serving pages. I figured out what was wrong and got the site up about 20 minutes after someone phoned me to tell me there was a problem. Apparently, this site was down for about, oh, 90 minutes.

Also, the problem on source.domania.net appears to now be resolved.
