Current status

  • There has been a problem reported with zipped files and WebTV. I *think* I have fixed the problem, but my Plus is toast, and I can't check to be sure.
  • There is a problem with the special file types we support, such as .RFI and .SHO. At present, they don't work. I'll see if I can get the software for those installed this evening.
  • The mail wasn't working. Because of that, I've been working on other problems besides setting up subdomains and domains, thinking that the work might have to be repeated anyhow. The mail is working now.
  • Setting up subdomains and domains takes a lot of manpower, and it'll take a few days to get everybody hooked up correctly. If you want to move to the head of the line, please squawk; most people probably don't care if it takes a little longer.
  • Nobody's been complaining about the server being slow, but I've been concerned about that. I discovered an old copy of my server tuning settings, and things have been moving markedly faster this afternoon. I also found something else to change; the server should be faster than ever at this point, except when I'm wrking on subdomains and domains; that sorta bogs down the server.
  • By a score of about 797 to 3, the folks at Domania have been extremely patient and supportive. I suspect if I were a customer, though, I might be one of those three. To my way of thinking, you're paying for fast and reliable hosting, not for excuses, so I'm not thrilled with our performance these last few days. But I still want to thank you for the many kind words that I've been hearing. Domania members are great!
  • Just in case you heard rumors, one of the AmishHosting servers had a problem right after I got Domania going again. When Domania first went down, I thought it might be an attack, so I turned the screws down a little tighter on the other servers - and one of them ratcheted the firewall settings so high, that even *I* couldn't get in. Oops! I thought it was down, but it wasn't. It was just breezing along, lazy as anything, but since it wasn't listening to anyone or talking to anyone, we all thought it had crashed. Well, I hope I don't do *that* again. (For the record, decimal points make a difference. If you ever tried to cook a roast at 3250F or 32.5F instead of 325F, you know what I mean....)
  • If you have a computer, even if you didn't have any problems getting back in after we came back up, I hope you go to OpenDNS anyway, take note of their nameserver IP addresses, and follow their instructions to use their nameservers. Faster surfing, less danger of being caught by a phisher, and it's not only free, but it's private. You don't have to give them your name or anything. They can help you block out porn sites, but I'm not sure if that's free, or if that's a for-pay feature. If there were little kids in my household, I think I'd like that pornblocking feature.

I hope everyone is having a good afternoon. And yes, I am getting around to my huge stack of unread email as fast as I can....

I am so glad Paul has

I am so glad Paul has all his lights on, even in the dark. Thanks for the good work and all the updates. Will be looking forward to getting the .sho files back online.. vacation pics you know.. :) Please take as good of care of yourself as you do our servers.

  • I believe the problem with zipped files and WebTV is fixed.
  • I believe the special types we support, such as .RFI and .SHO, are working again.
  • I'm still working on restoring subdomains and mail.
  • If you're on computer, and you haven't switched to OpenDNS, hop to it.

In the last 24 hours, I've gotten over 100 emails containing the latest Netsky and/or the sarahdeli viruses. The latter almost always seems to be "Fwd:Image" from sarahdeli@libero.it so it's easy to spot. One of the official names for Sarahdeli is Win32:VB-CD2(Wrm). If your virus protection software isn't finding these viruses, you probably need to update your virus protection software. If you don't have any anti-virus software, go to http://free.grisoft.com/ and download the free version of AVG. Or the paid version if you prefer. The point is, download something, install it, and keep it updated. AVG amd Avast are among the best, and they both have free versions. We do NOT recommend Norton Anti-Virus, and we especially do NOT recommend McAfee.

.rfi trouble

HI Peeps, been over a year since I've posted, wow, can't believe it's been that long. Hope everyone is doing fine.
Anywho, Paul, I know I've brought this to your attention over the phone earlier today and I don't expect miracles and I'm not complaining. Just letting you know that I've an .rfi directory set up for use in my mail sig. It's an embeded file ie.

[embed src="http://yadda.yadda.yadda.rfi]

It worked fine for a long time and now it's just not showing up. At least at the time of this posting it's not. Could it be that embeded files are no longer supported by WebTv and if so,
have you another suggestion other than [embed src= ???

Thanks for your time,
Mark
