Not sure this forum is still viable? I can't access the logon page. Page won't load. Anyone know anything?

Do I have your domain name? IMPORTANT!

Many of our hosting customers have their domain names registered with Domain750.

I really need to retire, for medical reasons, and I won't be able to give you the support for your domain name you need. Please transfer your domain name elsewhere BEFORE IT EXPIRES.

It's a pretty simple matter. Simply give Bert $10, and ask him to transfer the domain name. It would have cost you $10 anyhow to renew the name, and when you transfer the domain name, you will get a full year from your expiry date. That is, if you have 6 months to go, you will have 18 months after you do the transfer. It doesn't cost you anything extra, it just requires that you do this ahead of the expiry date.

If you wait until it expires, though, you can't transfer it at that time. You would need to renew it first, and then transfer it. And if you transfer it within 60 days of renewing it, you end up losing that extra year. Ouch.

If you want to go with another company, it would work about the same way. Some companies charge a slightly different price for renewing their own domain names than for transferring other domain names, but it's usually pretty piddling. If you transfer it to Bert, there won't be any interruption in the DNS service, because Bert is affiliated with Public Domain Registry, the same as I was, and you can still have *free* domain name "cloaking". Some outfits charge $8 to $13 annually to conceal your name and address on your domain registration.

Please do NOT allow your domain name to expire, and then renew it with me. As of March 1, I will start be charging $20, not $10, for domain names, because I really don't want your business. If you transfer your domain name before it expires, I won't get a dime - and that's the way it ought to be.

If your domain name is currently "cloaked" and you want to transfer your domain name to anyone OTHER than Bert, you'll need to let me know, so that I know that YOU are trying to transfer your domain name, rather than it being someone else trying to hijack your domain name.

New Temporary forum for Domania users

Hello everyone,
My name is Bert and I am the new owner of Domania Internet Services. We have taken control of Domania as of the 1st of February 2008. Some of you might remember me from my Webtv days when my nic was lost_boy-z.

First off, let me say, we will make no changes to the way Domania operates. Everything you can do now at Domania, you will be able to do in the future. And payments for your accounts will still be able to be made via Paypal, Money Order/Check, or over the phone via Credit Card.

I understand that many of our Webtv users do not like this method of a forum. We will in the future change that. But for now we do have some temporary forums set up in the ZboX forum which is at:

http://zboxhosting.com/board/index.php

Just scroll down and look for the Domania/Amish/PDhomes section. You can read all of the posts without being logged in, however to protect from spammers, you must register for the forum in order to post. I will be creating a poll in the Domania temporary forum for folks to pick which type of forum they would prefer. Your input on that would be greatly appreciated.

If you have any problems or questions please email me at support@zboxhosting.com

~;-)

A farewell

I've been involved in a many different businesses, mostly as owner, over the years. I sold produce along the road when I was 8, gleaned cornfields to earn the money to buy an English Racer when I was 9, and manufactured a small line of parts for hobby shops when I was 10. When my wife's websites needed better hosting at a reasonable price, we got our first server – and I started PDhomes so that others could share the server. Later, I added AmishHosting, and when Domania's server was vandalized, Craig's mother asked me to see if I could fix it.

I can't say hosting was always the most enjoyable of the businesses I've been in – working 24 hours straight to bring a server back from the dead is not much fun, and when I was a photographer, I once shot a Playboy playmate of the month – but helping people deal with the frustrations of using a computer or WebTV is rewarding, and almost every time I open an envelope with a check, or get a phone call, I appreciate the kind words people have offered me.

In recent years, attacks from spammers, scammers, script kiddies and vandals have increased to the point that the technical part of the job has become a real chore.

I promised Auline that I would do my best to run Domania as Craig would have, as a memorial to him. I've never been perfect, but in the past year, my health has limited my ability to give the kind of service I'd like you all to get. At this point, my wife has been pestering me to give up the hosting business, and my doctor has warned me that I need to retire or die.

Which is pretty much what they told me in 1994, when I retired the first time. I didn't mean to get so active again. I was just helping my wife with her business, and then things started to snowball.

I didn't want to see this hosting business in the hands of someone who didn't understand WebTV. At this point, less than 20% of the editing on sites is done with WebTV, but it's more than 20% of the sites – a lot of people do some editing with WebTV, some editing with PC. I thought it important to find someone competent to deal with both the technical and the business parts of the business, and important that it be someone who exhibited honesty and integrity.

Bert Pourchot is that someone, and he will be owner as well as operator of the business. While AmishHosting and PDhomes will be folded into ZboxHosting operation, D21C.COM and DOMANIA.US will remain separate.

Bert told me that one of the first things he intends to do is to set up a different Domania forum based on SMF, like the first forum I set up. I switched to Drupal because I couldn't figure out how to keep SMF secure, but he says he's solved that problem. That should be a welcome improvement. He also thinks he can improve on the billing system, which is something we sorely need.

As of February 1, checks and money orders should go to Bert at 214 Klenke Lane, Canyonville, Oregon 97417. If you mail payments to me, I'll just have to forward them to Bert.

Taking over Domania and AmishHosting and PDhomes, all at once, is going to be a bit of a shock to his wallet; I know these are tough times, but if you could get current and stay current, that would really help Bert out. And it's going to take a while for Bert to understand the Domania software, so please show him the same patience you extended to me when I first took over.

Thanks so much for making me a part of the Domania family. You've been great, and I will miss you.

Quick Tools - great!

Has the link to Quick Tools been in the members' area long or I am just noticing it? This is a very good idea having the file uploader, directory uploader, and source viewer all in one place. Thanks much for this; things like this really make a difference.

My payment

Paul, I sent my payment on the 21st, it was due on the 24th. I sent it through PayPal, and got a letter today that I hadn't been verified, I didn't want to use the PayPay card, the APR was too high. So now I'm verified and you should have received the payment. Please don't delete my account. I'll call the credit card that I used later and see if there's been a debit to my account. Everything seems ok in PayPal though as far as the payments listed.

If this didn't work, I'll sent you a check.

BTW How're you and your family doing?

mike
